Pelvic health physiotherapy for men in Tauranga

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that supports the bladder and bowel and plays a part in sexual function and core stability. In men, pelvic floor problems are common but often go unspoken. Bureta Physiotherapy offers private, respectful pelvic health physiotherapy for men, including care before and after prostate procedures.

Before a prostate procedure

If you are preparing for prostate surgery, such as a radical prostatectomy, learning how to find and use your pelvic floor muscles beforehand can make recovery easier. Research suggests that pelvic floor training before surgery may help with bladder control afterwards. At a pre-surgery appointment we can:

  • assess how your pelvic floor muscles are working
  • teach you how to activate and relax them correctly
  • explain what to expect in the first days and weeks after surgery
  • give you a simple exercise plan to start before your procedure

After a prostate procedure

Bladder leakage, urgency and discomfort are common after prostate surgery or radiation treatment. Physiotherapy can help you rebuild pelvic floor strength and control and return to normal activity at a safe pace. After your procedure we can:

  • assess your pelvic floor, bladder habits and general movement
  • build a graded exercise programme that fits your recovery and your surgeon's advice
  • advise on bladder training, fluids, lifting and return to exercise
  • review your progress and adjust your plan

We work alongside your surgeon, urologist and GP, and we always follow their guidance on when it is safe to start.

Other pelvic health concerns in men

We also see men with pelvic pain, bladder or bowel control concerns, urgency, and pelvic floor muscle tension.

What to expect at your first appointment

Your first visit is a private conversation about your history, your symptoms and your goals. We explain every step, and you stay in control of what is done. Many men start with education and exercises and no internal examination. Any examination is only done with your clear consent.

Women's pelvic health

Female pelvic health is a growing area of physiotherapy. We do not have a dedicated women's pelvic health physiotherapist at Bureta Physiotherapy, but if this is a concern for you we can direct you to one of our partnering colleagues.
